Many artists have some other form of art or creative works that inspire them or help them focus while making their own. Some have a favorite playlist of music, others need to be working in a room filled with paintings that they collected, while some just need to drink from a handmade coffee mug they found at a local art festival.
For Johanna, Jewelry Designer for Harold Jewelry, it’s literature and story-telling a.k.a. – audio books and podcasts.
Says Ingram, “I love listening to audiobooks and podcasts when I’m in the studio alone. It is part of why I love the process so much of what I do.” When asked about her favorites, she happily shared them. They are:
My Favorite Murder: Two funny L.A. women pick a murder each week and discuss the gritty details in a way that is fascinating and entertaining without being disrespectful. Say Ingram, “They are so smart and often go off on tangents about pop culture, but I love that just as much as I am fascinated by hearing about a murder story.”
The Mental Illness Happy Hour: This podcast interviews people who either have mental illness or have a family member with it. It is run by a comedian, so while the content is serious, he makes it more lighthearted. Ingram says, “It really has helped me with empathy and recognizing that everyone is going through their own thing in life, so I can try to better understand each person I come into contact with.”
Radiolab: Hosted by Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich, it is a radio show and podcast which intertwines anecdotes and science into sound and lush music documentaries.
“It gets me excited about interesting topics in science and what is going on in the world. They have amazingly good sound engineering on that podcast, too,” said Ingram.
Homecoming: This podcast features starring roles by – Catherine Keener, Oscar Isaac, David Schwimmer, David Cross, Amy Sedaris, Michael Cera, Mercedes Ruehl, Alia Shawkat, Chris Gethard, and Spike Jonze. Homecoming’s story is central to a caseworker at an experimental facility, her go-getting boss, and a soldier ready to reenter civilian life.
Girl on Guy: interviews with actors and their lives. Ingram claims, “If you start with LL Cool J, you will be hooked!”
Dirty John: Reporter, Christopher Goffard is the host of Dirty John. He tells the nightmarish story of interior designer, Debra Newell's horrifying relationship with anesthesiologist, John Meehan and how their relationship impacts her family.
Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders Seminar (ETL): Hosted by Stanford, this is a weekly seminar series on entrepreneurship, co-sponsored by BASES (a student entrepreneurship group), Stanford Technology Ventures Program, and the Department of Management Science and Engineering. Ingram expounds on why this one made her favorites list – “It gives me ideas and makes me excited about what I can do. Also, right now, I’m listening to a podcast with a local entrepreneur who I greatly admire, Lauren Bailey of Upward Projects featured on podcast title Built on Purpose. I’m loving it, too!”
